Dr. Kokou AZAMEDE

Auteur du projet

Kokou Azamede is an associate professor and senior lecturer at the University of Lomé, Department of German and Cultural Studies. He completed his doctorate at the University of Bremen in 2008 on the topic: "Transculturations? Ewe Christians between Germany and West Africa, 1884-1939".

His research focuses on transcultural studies, German missions and German colonialism as well as German colonial photography from West Africa. He was a fellow of the Hanns Seidel Foundation at the University of Bayreuth (2001-2002), of the Volkswagen Foundation at the university of Bremen (2004-2005). Postdoctoral fellow of the DAAD at the university of Bremen (2010 & 2014), of the Fritz Thyssen Foundation at the university of Frankfurt/M (2012-2013), of the Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa - MIASA at the University of Ghana (2021).

He was a visiting lecturer at the German Unit of the University of Education Winneba (2019), at the University of Tübingen (May-July 2022 and May-June 2025), at the University of Halle (June 2023 and September 2025), at the University of Düsseldorf (May 2025), at the University of Freiburg (June-August 2025).

He participated in several conferences and seminars on Colonial Archival and restitution (Frankfurt, Bremen, Vienna, Heidelberg, Geneva, Dakar, Lomé, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Hamburg, Dar Es Salaam, Berlin, Bayreuth, Freiburg, etc.) and created the website http://kolonialfotografie.com/ for pedagogical and didactical introduction to the use of colonial images from West Africa.

His current research projects relate to the recontextualization of ancestorial body parts from German Togo in German anthropologic collections, and the issue of colonial heritage (2022-2025); The re-conceptualization of missionary collection from German Togo and Gold Coast (2023-2025).

He is member of advisory boards of Merian Institute for Advanced Studies in Africa MIASA (since 2023), German Lost Arts (since 2023), DAAD Program Museums Lab (since 2025).

He is the 2022 laureate of the Jakob and Wilhelm Grimm Award.

Prof. Dr. Hahn is a member of the board of the Association for African Studies in Germany (VAD E.V.) and programme coordinator of the German-French Master of Arts: Ethnology and its German-French Perspectives (a variant of the Master of Arts in Social and Cultural Anthropology).
