How important is it on the West African coast?

Weaving is first and foremost a male activity. It is often passed down from father to son and can be practised as a professional activity.

The loincloth woven in the Ewe country (the coastal region between Ghana and Togo) is called Kente. There are several types, depending on quality and design. It is also woven in several other West African regions, including the Ashanti in Ghana, the Malinke in Guinea and the Songhai in Niger.

The cotton threads spun by the women are used for weaving. The different stages of weaving are described on the following website:
