According to the colonial administration's report sent to the Colonial Office in Berlin, the donations collected in Germany for the construction of the Nachtigal hospital amounted to 7,438 marks. The main contribution to the construction of the hospital came from the kings of Petit Popo (today Aného on the east coast of Togo). According to a document dated 20 September 1894, they offered the German colonial administration a 100 square metre plot of land in Petit Popo. In addition, the locals had made several thousand bricks, which they faithfully delivered. The total cost of building the hospital was 40,000 Mark. Only whites were allowed to be treated as first and second class patients in the hospital. A hut was built next to the main building and was used to consult third-class patients, in particular black locals.
